At least 12 people were killed, and 45 others were injured on Tuesday morning when a bus overturned in Gauteng Province, located in northeastern South Africa.
Andile Mngwevu, a member of the Mayoral Committee for Transport in Ekurhuleni City, confirmed that the incident took place on a highway in Ekurhuleni City, near Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport, at approximately 6:45 a.m. local time (0445 GMT).
Mngwevu stated that 12 individuals died at the scene, while 45 injured passengers were transported to nearby hospitals. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and offer our prayers for a swift recovery for those taken to hospitals in the area,” Mngwevu said. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the accident, and it has not yet been confirmed whether other vehicles were involved.
Ekurhuleni City spokesperson Zweli Dlamini told Xinhua that the bus was traveling from Katlehong to Kempton Park. “We are still at the scene and in the process of recovering the bodies,” he added.
