Building a Gas processing plant will help stabilize petroleum prices – CEMSE

Story Highlights
  • CEMSE supports building a new gas plant to reduce fuel prices in Ghana
  • The new plant will lower gas costs and stabilize fuel prices
  • Ghana wastes 17% of its gas, and using it will improve energy supply

The Centre for Environmental Management and Sustainable Energy (CEMSE) is supporting the government’s plan to build an additional gas processing plant, believing it will help stabilize petroleum prices in the country.

Energy and Green Transition Minister, John Jinapor, recently shared the government’s plan to construct a new gas processing facility to complement the existing Atuabo Gas Processing Plant, which is under pressure due to rising power demands.

In an interview, Benjamin Nsiah, Executive Director of CEMSE, praised the initiative. He said that if the plant is completed on time, it could significantly stabilize petroleum prices. Nsiah also mentioned that it would lower the cost of gas, making it cheaper than the current rates. He pointed out that gas prices in Nigeria, where there is an abundance of natural gas, are much more affordable compared to Ghana’s pricing.

Nsiah also highlighted that Ghana flares about 17% of its gas, releasing large amounts into the atmosphere. He stressed the importance of capturing this gas to meet growing energy demand.

Ghana’s energy sector has faced persistent fuel shortages, leading to frequent power outages and instability. At a press conference on March 7, 2025, Minister Jinapor confirmed that the government had received approval from the cabinet to proceed with plans for the new gas processing plant. The facility is expected to address power shortages, improve energy security, and ensure a more reliable natural gas supply for power generation.
