Mark Carney, Canada’s incoming Prime Minister, has pledged to triumph in the ongoing trade war with US President Donald Trump after winning the race to succeed Justin Trudeau.

“Americans should be clear: in trade, as in hockey, Canada will come out on top,” Carney, the former Governor of the Bank of England, declared to his supporters.

Carney, who is set to take office in the coming days, has promised to implement retaliatory tariffs on US imports until “Americans show us respect.”

The 59-year-old, who has never held an elected position, won the leadership race by a landslide, securing 86% of the vote.

He is expected to call for a swift general election. Though the Conservative opposition’s lead is shrinking, polls still place them ahead. Trudeau resigned in January after a nine-year tenure.

Carney, born in Canada’s Northwest Territories and raised in Edmonton, Alberta, has served recently as a special economic advisor to Justin Trudeau.

In 2013, he made history as the first non-British Governor of the Bank of England, a position he held for years. Prior to that, Carney had guided Canada through the Great Recession as Governor of the Bank of Canada before being recruited for the prestigious role in the UK.

Though he has never held a political office, Carney’s leadership skills earned him a decisive victory in the race to replace Trudeau. Now, he faces the challenge of managing Canada through a growing trade conflict with the United States.

He’s positioning himself as the leader who can navigate the fallout from President Trump’s tariffs.

“In times like this, experience in crisis management and strong negotiation skills are essential,” Carney stated during a leadership debate last month.
