The Ghana Education Service (GES) has ordered the closure of 21 primary schools in the Bimbagu Circuit of the Bunkprugu/Nakpanduri District in the North East Region, following escalating violence between the Nanik and Bimbagu communities.

Dalukirir Jakper Jolly, the Supervisor for the Bimbagu Central and East Circuits, confirmed the closure, citing a directive from the Regional Director of GES. The decision was made in response to the recent outbreak of violence between the two communities.

The violence began in the early hours of Friday, February 28, when an attack resulted in the deaths of three residents of Nanik, including a teacher from Walewale. The victims were reportedly burned beyond recognition. According to community sources, heavily armed assailants stormed the Nanik community around 5 a.m., engaging in shooting and setting several properties on fire.

Security forces arrived at the scene approximately two hours later and found numerous houses and food supplies had been destroyed in the arson attacks.

Jolly explained that the decision to close the schools was made out of concern for the safety of students and staff, with fears of the violence spreading to other parts of the district.
