  • Production to be partially filmed in Ghana
  • Boosts Ghana-Nigeria film collaboration

Ghanaian actress Fella Makafui has secured a major role in the upcoming Season 2 of Nigerian Netflix series ‘Anikulapo’. This development is a direct result of the National Film Authority of Ghana’s collaborative efforts with African countries to promote Ghanaian talent globally.

In a statement on Facebook, the National Film Authority announced, “We are pleased to announce that beautiful and hardworking Fella Makafui will be introduced as a main character entering this groundbreaking Nigerian ‘African’ masterpiece in the second season, green lighted by Netflix to show in over 191 countries under our #ShootInGhana agenda.”

The authority expressed gratitude to Kunle Afolayan, producer and director of the series, for his support. “The story delves into pre-colonial time and Fella learnt to speak the Yoruba language from scratch – what dedication to the craft.”

In June 2024, filmmaker Kunle Afolayan revealed plans to film part of ‘Anikulapo’ Season 2 in Ghana, aligning with the National Film Authority’s ‘Shoot in Ghana’ initiative. Executive Secretary Juliet Yaa Asantewa Asante, who brokered the deal, noted, “This is an important development. The shooting of parts of ‘Anikulapo’ in Ghana is a good opportunity to revive and enhance the film relationship between Ghana and Nigeria.”

Afolayan’s film school, KAP Academy, has trained over 10,000 students across the continent. The production is expected to create employment opportunities for Ghanaians and facilitate skills transfer.

‘Anikulapo’ is a Netflix original film and television series. The National Film Authority continues to promote Ghana as a prime shooting location, following the success of the “Shoot in Ghana” campaign.

Meanwhile, the Africa Cinema Summit is underway in Accra, focusing on growth in local content production and consumption. The event has drawn international film professionals, including Idris Elba, and will feature a Legacy Award ceremony on October 9.

Partners for the summit include Filmhouse Group (Nigeria), Silverbird Cinema (Ghana), and Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria.
