The Ghana Police Service has confirmed that Oliver Barker-Vormawor, a prominent member of the Democracy Hub, has been hospitalized after complaining of ill-health. This development comes after Barker-Vormawor, a governance advisor and Cambridge-Africa PhD student, reported feeling unwell, prompting immediate medical attention.
According to the Police statement, Barker-Vormawor’s colleague, Fanny Otoo, also fell ill and was transferred to the Police Hospital in Accra on Tuesday, September 24, 2024. Doctors attended to Otoo and later admitted him for further treatment.
Barker-Vormawor’s health concerns arose later that night, and he was also taken to the Police Hospital, where doctors assessed his condition and admitted him for treatment.
The Police emphasized that they have not denied medical attention to Barker-Vormawor or any other suspects in custody, addressing concerns about their well-being.
“The Police would like to inform the public that at no point in time have the Police denied these suspects any medical attention,” the statement reiterated.
This clarification comes amid worries about the treatment of Democracy Hub members, including Barker-Vormawor, who have been in Police custody.
Barker-Vormawor’s lawyer had previously sought medical attention for him, highlighting the need for timely care.
The Police Hospital’s medical team is now attending to both Barker-Vormawor and Otoo, ensuring they receive necessary treatment.
