Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, the African Union High Representative for Silencing the Guns, has called on Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC) to act swiftly to rebuild stakeholder confidence before the upcoming elections.
His appeal comes in response to concerns from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and other organizations regarding discrepancies in the voter register and other issues.
During the opening of the Diplomatic Honours ceremony in Accra, Dr. Chambas stressed the critical role of transparency in elections.
He pointed out that the EC still has the opportunity to regain the trust of political parties and stakeholders through decisive measures that promote openness and accountability.
Dr. Chambas noted, “There is still time to earn the trust and confidence of all parties and stakeholders involved in the electoral process.”
He further suggested that publishing polling station results on the EC’s website would significantly improve the process’s credibility and transparency.
“This step, frequently recommended by our partners, would greatly enhance the integrity of the electoral process and be well-received by those advocating for such transparency,” Dr. Chambas added.
