The National Theatre of Ghana held its Annual Conference of Performing Arts on Wednesday, September 11, 2024, at the British Council in Accra. The conference, themed “A Rich Performing Arts Industry: The Role of Public Policy,” convened key stakeholders from the creative arts sector.
The event served as a platform for creative professionals to propose strategies for enhancing the growth of Ghana’s creative industry. This conference is part of a series of discussions leading up to a major event scheduled for October 2, 2024.
Prominent figures at the conference included Pan Africanist scholar and writer Prof. Esi Sutherland-Addy, Dr. Edward Odoi, Mr. Kwame Boadi, and Mr. Joseph Sarpong. The session was moderated by Apiorkor Seyiram Ashong-Abbey.
During the conference, the speakers underscored the importance of a robust performing arts industry for a vibrant cultural landscape. They emphasized the necessity for public policies to support the sector, advocating for increased investment in creative infrastructure, enhanced funding and financing, and a policy framework to fortify intellectual property rights.
The speakers also highlighted the need for comprehensive research and data on the creative economy to strengthen capacity and ensure stability in the industry.
Attendees included Nana Fredua-Agyeman Ofori-Atta, Board Chairman of the National Theatre; former Ablekuma South MP and former Information Minister Fritz Baffour; and Prof. Awo Mana Asiedu, Dean of the School of Performing Arts, among other industry professionals.
