In Salaga, the capital of the Salaga South Constituency in the Savannah Region, a violent brawl broke out between NDC and NPP supporters, resulting in multiple injuries.
The chaos erupted as both parties gathered to welcome the District Road Improvement Programme (DRIP) equipment arriving from Damongo.
Earlier in August, MP Hajia Zuweira Ibrahima claimed that the DRIP equipment was funded through the MPs’ share of the District Assembly Common Fund and personally handed over to them by President Akufo-Addo.
She emphasized that all 275 MPs had requested that the government use their common fund arrears for road construction equipment.
In response, East Gonja District Chief Executive Richard Broni disputed these claims, asserting that the equipment was government-funded and not purchased using the MPs’ share of the Common Fund.
He argued that the combined Common Fund of all MPs for a year would not be sufficient to cover the cost of such machinery.
The East Gonja Municipal Assembly was the first to move its share of the DRIP equipment from Damongo after its launch.
Prior to its arrival, both NDC and NPP had mobilized their supporters to welcome it, leading to a violent clash. Numerous individuals were injured and taken to Salaga Government Hospital.
No arrests have been made, and the East Gonja Municipal Security Committee is set to meet with party leaders on September 6 to address the situation.
