Mobile Money Vendors in Sissala East Suspend Services Amid Rising Robberies

Story Highlights
  • Mobile money vendors have faced 12 armed robbery incidents in three months
  • The vendors have suspended services indefinitely
  • There are increasing demands for improved security measures

Mobile money agents in the Sissala East Municipality, Upper West Region, Ghana, have halted their operations indefinitely due to a wave of violent robberies targeting their businesses.

This decision comes after twelve armed robberies occurred in the past three months, with eight specifically targeting mobile money operators.

In August 2024 alone, four mobile money shops were robbed, leading to the deaths of two individuals. Despite the arrest of suspects, their release on bail has raised concerns about the effectiveness of law enforcement.

The association’s chairman, Tahiru Issahaku, stressed the importance of suspending services to safeguard members. As a result, mobile money shops in Tumu and nearby areas have remained closed.

The strike has caused significant inconvenience to residents, who are now unable to access essential banking services.

There is growing pressure on authorities to address the security crisis and allow businesses to resume operations in this agricultural region.
