Gomoa Okyereko Rice Farms Flooded After Bridge Water Release

- Over 100 acres of rice farms destroyed in Gomoa East after sudden river release
- Contractor failed to notify farmers before unblocking River Ayensu
- Farmers face major losses, many had taken loans for cultivation
Over 100 acres of rice farms at Gomoa Okyereko in the Gomoa East District have been flooded and destroyed after a contractor working on the Kasoa-Winneba Highway released water from a temporary blockage of the Ayensu River.
The contractor had previously blocked the river to facilitate bridge construction but released the water without notifying nearby farmers. The sudden rush submerged large sections of farmland, wiping out crops that had required substantial financial investment.
Speaking to Adom News, several devastated farmers shared that many had taken loans to fund their farming and now face major financial setbacks. They are urgently appealing to the government for compensation and emergency assistance.
The farmers warn that the destruction not only endangers their livelihoods but also poses a threat to local food security and the area’s economic stability.
In response, Gomoa East District Chief Executive Margaret Naana Ackon assured the affected farmers that the Assembly is committed to supporting them. She acknowledged the extent of the damage and said steps would be taken to engage relevant agencies for relief and possible compensation.
