In a surprising turn of events, Cynthia Morrison, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Agona West, has announced her decision to run as an independent candidate in the upcoming 2024 parliamentary elections.

During a recent interaction with her constituents, Morrison emphasized her unwavering commitment to the development of Agona, stating, “God willing, I would be contesting the parliamentary election as an independent candidate. It is not about the NDC, and it is not about the NPP. It is about the development of Agona.”

This decision comes after Morrison’s defeat in the NPP parliamentary primary on April 13, where she secured 152 votes, losing to Christopher Arthur, who received 240 votes. Despite her defeat, Morrison remains dedicated to her constituency and has called on residents to support her independent candidacy.

Morrison urged her constituents to prioritize her candidacy, saying, “I don’t care whether you vote for former President John Dramani Mahama or Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. But the most important thing is for you to vote massively for Cynthia Morrison so I can come and complete the work I started.”

Morrison’s decision to go independent is seen as a bold move, driven by her passion for the development of Agona West. As the former Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, Morrison has a proven track record of dedication to her constituents. Morrison first won the Agona West seat in the 2016 general elections and was re-elected in 2020 with an impressive 30,513 votes out of a total of 59,193 valid votes cast.

Her independent candidacy is expected to shake up the political landscape in Agona West, as she seeks to continue her work in the constituency. Morrison’s commitment to Agona West remains unwavering, and her constituents will be watching closely as she embarks on this new political journey.
