In a significant operation, the Drug Enforcement Unit of the Northern Police Command of the Ghana Police Service conducted a night raid in Tamale’s central business district, resulting in the arrest of 85 individuals involved in drug trafficking and prostitution.

The suspects, who used the local taxi rank as a hub for distributing illicit drugs, primarily targeted young people at night. Their activities also included promoting gambling and dealing in stolen phones.

The raid led to the apprehension of several teenagers engaged in prostitution and sexual activities under the Tamale overpass. Many of those detained were found with stolen phones and gambling equipment, in addition to drug-related charges.

The lucrative nature of these illegal activities has drawn many unemployed youths into the sex trade. Some of those arrested were caught engaging in sexual acts in their vehicles or motorcycles.

The operation involved screening over 50 young men and 25 prostitutes, including several Nigerian nationals.

The police have seized vehicles, motorbikes, and mobile phones from the suspects.

The individuals are currently in custody, awaiting further investigation, as authorities continue their efforts to hold those involved accountable.
