Mahama Commends Asiedu Nketia’s Stance on Peace Pact
- Mahama supports Asiedu Nketia's peace pact concerns.
- Asiedu Nketia opposes signing due to past failures.
- Mahama wants justice for 2020 election victims.
- NDC has not decided on peace pact signing yet.
John Dramani Mahama, the Flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has expressed his understanding of the concerns raised by the party’s National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, regarding the peace declaration. Although the NDC has not yet made a final decision on whether to sign the peace pact, Mahama acknowledges Asiedu Nketia’s reservations.
Asiedu Nketia had opposed the signing of the peace declaration, citing the lack of tangible results from previous agreements. Mahama shares Asiedu Nketia’s concerns, particularly in light of the killing of eight NDC members during the 2020 general elections, with no action taken since then.
He questions the value of signing a peace pact when justice has not been served for the victims and their families. Mahama emphasizes that the NDC has not taken a definitive stance on the matter, but he appreciates Asiedu Nketia’s position.
Asiedu Nketia had argued that previous peace declarations have not resolved any issues, making the signing of another pact seem futile. Mahama reiterates that the party will carefully consider its decision, taking into account the concerns raised by Asiedu Nketia.
The National Peace Council has taken note of the concerns raised by the NDC leadership and is expected to address them. The debate surrounding the peace declaration highlights the need for meaningful action and accountability in ensuring peaceful elections, rather than just signing agreements.
