GSA to Receive GH₵10m Yearly for Mineral Prospecting, Bawumia Assures
- Bawumia pledges GH₵10m for mineral exploration.
- Scientific approach to replace "trial and error" mining.
- Community mining scheme to be launched.
- Chiefs to be involved in mining licensing.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has made a significant promise to the Geological Survey Authority (GSA). He has pledged to provide the GSA with at least GH₵10 million annually to enhance their mineral exploration efforts.
This commitment is part of the NPP’s broader strategy to maximize the benefits Ghanaians derive from the country’s mineral resources. Dr. Bawumia believes the current system of issuing prospecting licenses to companies is flawed, leading to environmental destruction through a “trial and error” approach.
He proposes a more scientific and targeted approach, utilizing the GSA’s expertise to identify specific mineral locations. With this information, mineral exploration companies can focus their efforts, reducing the environmental impact.
Dr. Bawumia also announced plans to initiate a community mining scheme, providing support and common user facilities for local miners. He emphasized the importance of involving traditional leaders in the mining licensing process, suggesting they should have a stake in future small-scale mining operations.
Dr. Bawumia believes this inclusive approach will ensure more efficient and sustainable mining practices. By resourcing the GSA and engaging local communities, the NPP aims to create a more equitable and environmentally conscious mining sector.
