Health Committee Slams Closure of Korle-Bu’s Renal Unit, Demands Answers

- Korle-Bu's Renal Unit closed suddenly, resulting in 3 patient deaths.
- No official explanation given for the closure, sparking outrage.
- National Insurance Authority had promised funding for kidney patients, but failed to deliver.
- Health Committee strongly condemns the situation, demanding answers and action.
The Health Committee of Parliament has strongly condemned the sudden closure of the Renal Unit at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital. The unit was shut down almost two weeks ago without an official explanation, sparking widespread outrage.
The closure has had devastating consequences, with three kidney patients confirmed dead due to the lack of treatment. Baffour Ahenkorah, President of the Kidney Patients Association, confirmed the tragic loss of life.
Member of Parliament for Central Tongu and Health Committee member, Alexander Roosevelt, expressed shock and disappointment at the situation. He recalled that the National Insurance Authority had recently requested funding to support kidney patients.
Roosevelt questioned the National Insurance Authority’s claims of releasing funds to settle renal patients’ bills at Korle-Bu Hospital. He expressed disbelief that the Renal Unit was closed due to a lack of medical supplies, despite the promised funding.
Roosevelt criticized the situation, stating that it is unacceptable to “joke with the health of our own people.” The closure of the Renal Unit has raised serious concerns about the healthcare system in Ghana and the government’s commitment to prioritizing citizens’ health.
