NDC Alleges Bawumia’s Brother Overcharged for Sunyani Airport Renovation

Story Highlights
  • Sammy Gyamfi claims the cost of the renovation is excessively high
  • "The contract was awarded without a competitive bidding process"
  • Sammy Gyamfi points out sole-sourcing method used for this contract

Sammy Gyamfi, the National Communications Officer for the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has accused the Akufo-Bawumia administration of mishandling state resources.

According to Sammy Gyamfi the renovation contract for Sunyani Airport was awarded to the brother of Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia without proper competitive bidding.

During a media briefing at the latest Moment of Truth series on August 7, he criticized the cost of the renovation, which he says was twice as high as building a new airport.

He highlighted that the contract for Phase 1 of the Sunyani Airport’s rehabilitation, valued at GH₵52.25 million, was awarded through sole-sourcing—an approach Dr. Bawumia had previously criticized.

Sammy Gyamfi emphasized that the overpriced contract and the lack of competitive tendering contradict Bawumia’s earlier stance against such practices.
