- Mahama pledges to complete project if elected.
John Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has vowed to hold accountable those responsible for the financial loss of $12 million at the Pwalugu Dam project. Mahama made this pledge during a media interaction in Bolgatanga on Wednesday, emphasizing his commitment to completing the dam project if elected.
The Pwalugu multipurpose dam was intended to mitigate the recurring floods in the Upper East Region by 2019, but the project has stalled despite the significant financial investment. Mahama explained that the project’s funding issues began when the new government took over and decided to fund it through the Government of Ghana (GoG) budget.
He noted that relying on the consolidated fund for a project of this magnitude would inevitably lead to challenges, which is exactly what happened. The NDC flagbearer criticized the government for cutting sod for the project in 2019, only to abandon it, resulting in a significant financial loss.
Mahama emphasized that the $12 million spent on the project has yielded no results, with no work done on the site. He stressed that someone must be held accountable for causing financial loss to the state and pledged to investigate and prosecute those responsible.
Despite the challenges, Mahama reiterated his commitment to completing the Pwalugu Dam project, recognizing its importance in mitigating floods in the Upper East Region. By holding those responsible accountable and completing the project, Mahama aims to demonstrate his administration’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and responsible governance.
