  • Bill expected to be signed into law by the president.

Deputy Majority Leader in Parliament, Patricia Appiagyei, has emphasized the need for the Children, Gender and Social Protection Ministry to establish a Gender Equity Committee. This committee will oversee the implementation of the Affirmative Action Gender Equity Bill 2024, passed by Parliament on July 30.

The Affirmative Action Bill aims to create a more equitable society by addressing socio-cultural, political, economic, and educational imbalances. The bill will be implemented in both public and private sectors, promoting gender equality and inclusivity.

Appiagyei explained that the committee will engage with Trades Unions, political parties, and the private sector to ensure they adopt gender-sensitive recruitment practices. The goal is to address the significant gender gap in employment and create a more balanced workforce.

Appiagyei stressed the importance of sensitizing stakeholders about the bill to ensure a smooth implementation process. Once the bill becomes law, employers, including government organizations and security services, will be required to include women in their recruitment processes.

For example, if a company is hiring five people, at least two must be women, promoting gender equality in the workplace. Parliament will soon transmit the bill to the presidency for presidential assent, and Appiagyei is confident that the president will be eager to sign it into law.
