The flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has stated that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo does not have the authority to decide who he hands over power to after the general elections. Mahama made this statement while speaking to the Central Regional House of Chiefs after introducing his running mate to them on Tuesday, July 30.

He emphasized that the president will have no choice but to hand over power to whoever is elected by the people of Ghana. Mahama’s statement was in response to President Akufo-Addo’s earlier comment that he could not hand over power to someone he had defeated twice in elections.

President Akufo-Addo had made this comment while addressing supporters at a mini rally in Doboro, Greater Accra region. Akufo-Addo had stated that he could not hand over to someone who is not happy with his work and would likely destroy it.

Mahama, however, countered that the president’s personal feelings should not determine who he hands over power to. He emphasized that the decision of who becomes the next president is in the hands of the people of Ghana, not the incumbent president.

Mahama urged President Akufo-Addo to promise to hand over power to whoever wins the election, rather than making conditions about who he would or wouldn’t hand over to. By making this statement, Mahama is seeking to reassure the public that the transfer of power will be peaceful and democratic, regardless of who wins the election.
