Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, has emphasized agriculture as his top priority if elected President in the upcoming 2024 general elections.
During a visit to Sandem-Nab, Nab Azaksuk Azantilow, Paramount Chief of the Builsa Traditional Area in the Upper East Region, as part of his campaign tour, Dr. Bawumia assured farmers of his commitment to enhancing agricultural productivity.
He pledged to collaborate with countries renowned for high crop yields such as Brazil and China, aiming to adopt their best practices and advanced agricultural technologies.
Dr. Bawumia outlined his plan to establish District Agricultural Mechanisation centres across farming districts. These centres would provide farmers with affordable equipment to boost production capabilities.
“Agriculture is going to be my number one priority. We will ensure that all necessary pillars are in place to support our farmers,” Dr. Bawumia affirmed.
In addition to promoting advanced farming methods, Dr. Bawumia expressed his intention to transition Ghana away from chemical fertilizers towards lime, citing its affordability and potential benefits for soil fertility.
“We want Ghana to shift from chemical fertilizers to lime. We have abundant limestone resources domestically, which are more cost-effective than fertilizers. Our goal is to support farmers with this alternative soil treatment method,” he explained during his address.
