Katy Perry’s Comeback Single “Woman’s World” Falters in Charts

Pop star Katy Perry’s return to the music scene with her latest single “Woman’s World” has faced a disappointing reception, landing at number 63 on the US chart and 47 in the UK. The song, a precursor to her upcoming seventh album “143” set for release in September, has not only been criticized on social media but has also been met with scathing reviews.

The Guardian described it as “regressive, warmed-over hell,” while The Cut suggested Perry is stuck in 2016, and Rolling Stone questioned if it might be the worst comeback single ever released. The track’s feminist themes, depicted in its lyrics celebrating women as champions and superheroes, have been perceived by many as out of touch.

In the accompanying music video, Perry, dressed as Rosie the Riveter, and other women perform at a construction site in revealing attire. Scenes including urinals, sex toys, and slapstick humor drew further criticism. Perry defended the video as satire and slapstick in a behind-the-scenes Instagram post.

However, Laura Snapes of The Guardian pointed out that Perry seems to struggle to compete with today’s pop stars like Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, and Charli XCX, who embody inventiveness and self-awareness in their music.

Criticism has also been directed at Perry for collaborating with producer Dr. Luke, who faced allegations of abuse from fellow singer Kesha in 2014. Despite the legal dispute being settled last year, Kesha’s recent tweet seemingly mocked Perry’s choice of collaborators.

Katy Perry, known for her record-breaking album “Teenage Dream” in 2010, which produced five number one singles, saw her last album “Smile” released in 2020 receive mixed reviews but achieved top-five status in both the UK and US charts.
