A shocking case of human trafficking has come to light in the Central region of Ghana, where a 30-year-old man, Nana Kofi Amofa, also known as Kofi Yesu, has been arrested for attempting to sell his 6-year-old niece. The arrest was made by the Central East Regional Police Intelligence Unit (PID) on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, around 10:00 pm at Gomoa Buduburam, near Obolo Estate.

According to the police, they had received information that Amofa had expressed a desire to sell the 6-year-old girl to obtain money to travel to Canada. To catch Amofa in the act, officers from the Police Intelligence Unit posed as potential buyers and engaged in a transaction with him.

During the transaction, Amofa requested GHC150,000 in exchange for the child, revealing the shocking extent of his desperation. Following his arrest, Amofa admitted that the child, the daughter of his senior brother Kwadwo Brako, was the intended victim.

The child had been invited to stay with Amofa under the pretext of better educational opportunities, but he had actually planned to exploit her for financial gain. The child and Amofa have been handed over to the Kasoa Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) for further investigation and necessary action.

This disturbing incident highlights the need for vigilance and swift action against human trafficking and exploitation. The police are commended for their prompt response and arrest of the suspect, ensuring the safety of the child and preventing a potential tragedy.
