President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has expressed his confidence in the competency of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer and running mate for the 2024 General Election. He believes that Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Dr. Matthew Opoku-Prempeh have the skills and knowledge to secure a prosperous future for Ghana.

The President made this declaration during a visit to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu, at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi. He was there to introduce Dr. Opoku-Prempeh, also known as Napo, as the party’s presidential running mate.

Akufo-Addo has worked closely with both Bawumia and Opoku-Prempeh and can attest to their capabilities. He believes that they have what it takes to lead the country to prosperity. Dr. Opoku-Prempeh, the Member of Parliament for Manhyia-South, has been a key figure in the NPP’s activities since 2017. He has served as Minister of Education and later as Minister of Energy.

The NPP has been one of the dominant parties in Ghana’s multi-party democracy since 1992. The party has had several flagbearers, including the late Professor Albert Adu-Boahen, former President John Agyekum Kufuor, and current President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

This year’s elections are crucial for the governing party, which is seeking to retain power amid economic challenges. The main opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is expected to give the NPP a stiff competition.

Political analysts predict a close race, with various dynamics and intricacies at play. President Akufo-Addo is hopeful that Dr. Opoku-Prempeh’s expertise will help the presidential candidate secure a resounding win for the NPP. The President appealed to the party’s supporters to unite and focus on the task ahead. He believes that unity and hard work will lead the party to victory.

Otumfuo Osei Tutu commended the NPP for the peaceful selection of Dr. Opoku-Prempeh as the presidential running mate. He urged political parties to be development-oriented and work hard to address the needs of the citizenry. The Asantehene’s words were seen as a call to action for political parties to prioritize the nation’s development and the well-being of its citizens.
