The Ghana Electoral Commission (EC) has announced a significant decision to allow students to transfer their votes to their campus locations. This move enables students to participate in the upcoming general elections on December 7.

The EC has scheduled the vote transfer process to take place from July 3 to July 5, 2024, on school campuses across Ghana. Daniel Oppong Kyeremeh, President of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), has commended the EC for this decision.

He urged all Ghanaian students to take advantage of this opportunity by visiting the voter transfer centers on their campuses with their ID cards for verification and activation of the transfer. Kyeremeh emphasized that students can only transfer their votes to a constituency where their school is located, and not to a different constituency.

The NUGS President also addressed the challenges faced by Ghanaian students studying abroad, particularly those in Morocco and Europe, who are struggling due to delayed stipend payments. Kyeremeh revealed that his administration is working closely with the Office of the Chief of Staff, the Education Minister, and the Scholarship Secretariat to find a lasting solution to this issue.

He assured that measures are being put in place to ensure the affected students receive the necessary assistance to make their lives more bearable while studying abroad. The vote transfer process is expected to be a smooth and efficient process, with the EC ensuring that all necessary arrangements are made to facilitate the transfer.

Students have been encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to exercise their civic duty and participate in the democratic process. The EC’s decision has been widely welcomed, and it is expected to increase student participation in the upcoming general elections.
