Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has sounded a warning to Ghanaian leaders, urging them to draw lessons from the recent events in Kenya. As Ghana prepares for its crucial election on December 7, Bagbin emphasized the need for leaders to ensure free, fair, and transparent polls.
The Speaker noted that the situation in Kenya is not vastly different from Ghana’s, and therefore, leaders must not take things for granted. Bagbin has reached out to key stakeholders, including the Electoral Commission, National Commission for Civic Education, traditional authorities, and the Chief Justice, to engage in discussions.
He also plans to meet with President Akufo-Addo to ensure a violent-free electoral process. Speaking in Kumasi, Bagbin stressed the importance of preemptive measures to safeguard Ghana’s democracy ahead of the 2024 elections.
He cautioned that complacency could lead to unrest, citing the recent events in Kenya and Tanzania as examples. Bagbin emphasized his commitment to ensuring the right person, chosen by Ghanaians, leads the country.
He vowed to remain impartial in his efforts, avoiding any appearance of partisanship. By taking proactive steps, Bagbin believes Ghana can avoid the disturbances seen in Kenya and ensure a peaceful electoral process.
