- The US remains level on points with Panama
The United States Soccer Federation (US Soccer) strongly condemned the racist abuse directed at several American players online following their 2-1 defeat to Panama in the Copa America.
Players Targeted After Defeat
Monaco’s Folarin Balogun, Crystal Palace’s Chris Richards, and Juventus teammates Timothy Weah and Weston McKennie were all subjected to racist attacks after the loss.
Weah Sent Off, Apologizes
Weah received a red card for an off-the-ball incident and later apologized to his teammates, calling it a “moment of frustration.”
US Soccer’s Statement
US Soccer released a statement condemning the abuse: “There is absolutely no place in the game for such hateful and discriminatory behavior. These actions are not only unacceptable but also contrary to the values of respect and inclusivity that we uphold as an organization.”
Match Summary
Despite playing with a numerical disadvantage for most of the game, Panama emerged victorious. Balogun scored for the US, but Panama equalized quickly and then secured the win with a late goal. Both teams were reduced to 10 men with red cards.
Looking Ahead
The US remains level on points with Panama in their group. They need to at least match Panama’s result in their final match to progress to the knockout stages.
