The Minister for Information, Fatimatu Abubakar, has commended the Right to Information Commission for a significant surge in requests for information under the Right to Information (RTI) law.

Speaking during a courtesy visit by the Commission on Wednesday, June 26, Ms. Abubakar praised the increase in requests from 785 in 2022 to 1,749 in 2023, attributing it to a growing culture of accountability and citizen engagement.

“Transparency and public access to information are essential for promoting good governance,” she emphasized.

However, Yaw Sarpong, Executive Secretary of the Commission, expressed concern over a decline in annual reports submitted by public institutions. To address this, the Commission has created a user-friendly template on its website to facilitate easier submission of reports.

The Commission has also launched initiatives to increase regional participation and enhance public awareness about the RTI law, aiming to foster greater transparency and accountability across public institutions in Ghana.
