Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, the running mate of John Dramani Mahama, has challenged critics to provide evidence that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) plans to cancel the free senior high school program if elected in the upcoming elections.
Speaking at Old Tafo in the Abuakwa North Constituency on Wednesday, June 26, Opoku-Agyemang dismissed claims that the NDC is against the free senior high school policy, labeling those making such claims as liars.
She dared anyone to show proof that John Mahama will cancel Free SHS, emphasizing the NDC’s commitment to education and its desire to improve the program. Her comments come at a time when the Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, accused the NDC lawmakers of failing to commit to the free SHS Bill, which aims to make the program mandatory.
Afenyo-Markin had challenged the opposition legislators to state whether the free senior high school program is their priority or not, citing the ranking member on education’s opposition to the bill. Opoku-Agyemang’s response is seen as a direct challenge to the ruling party’s claims and an attempt to reassure Ghanaians of the NDC’s commitment to free education.
The free senior high school program was introduced by the current government in 2017 and has been a contentious issue in the political landscape. While the NDC has promised to review and improve the program, the ruling party has accused them of planning to cancel it, which Opoku-Agyemang has vehemently denied.
The debate over the free senior high school program is likely to continue as the election season heats up, with education being a key issue for many Ghanaians. Opoku-Agyemang’s dare to critics is seen as a bold move, challenging the ruling party to provide evidence of their claims and reassuring Ghanaians of the NDC’s commitment to education.
