Borussia Dortmund has announced the surprise departure of their manager, Edin Terzic, despite a remarkable run in the UEFA Champions League. Terzic led the team to the Champions League final in the 2023-24 season, where they narrowly lost to Real Madrid at Wembley, finishing as runners-up.
According to reports, Terzic requested the termination of his contract with immediate effect, bringing an end to his two-and-a-half-year tenure as head coach. In a statement, Dortmund confirmed that they had agreed to Terzic’s request following discussions with the club’s senior management, including CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke and sporting director Sebastian Kehl.
Terzic explained that after nine years at BVB, including six on the coaching staff and two and a half as head coach, he felt that the club’s new era should begin with a new man on the touchline. He acknowledged the difficulty of his decision, but expressed his gratitude to the club, players, and fans for their support during his tenure.
Terzic’s journey with the club began in their academy from 2010 to 2013, where he worked as a youth coach. He then followed Slaven Bilic to Besiktas and West Ham, before returning to Dortmund as Lucien Favre’s assistant in 2018.
He took over as interim boss in 2020 and led the team to German Cup success, before being appointed permanent head coach. Under his guidance, Dortmund finished second in the Bundesliga last season and fifth in the 2023-24 campaign.
CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke praised Terzic’s contributions, highlighting his achievements and expressing gratitude for his service. “Edin Terzic has done an outstanding job in his time at BVB, and we all owe him a huge debt of gratitude,” Watzke said. The club will now begin the search for a new manager as they look to build on their recent successes in domestic and European competitions, with the aim of returning to the top of German football.
