- The training will strengthen capacity of Ghanaian security services
- Upcoming sessions are scheduled for Kumasi
The Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) has completed a successful training program designed to prevent electoral violence and ensure a peaceful voting process in Ghana’s upcoming 2024 elections.
The two-week “Electoral Violence and Security (EVS)” course brought together security personnel from various agencies, including the police, military, customs, prisons, immigration, and fire service.
Enhancing Skills for Peaceful Elections
This specialized course equips law enforcement with essential strategies to prevent, manage, and respond to potential electoral violence.
This training aims to strengthen the capacity of Ghanaian security services to deliver free, fair, and peaceful elections.
Strong Commitment from Participants and Germany
Air Commodore David Akrong, KAIPTC’s deputy commandant, praised the participants for their dedication and active participation in discussions aimed at strengthening Ghanaian democracy. The German government, a longstanding partner in promoting peace and security in Ghana, also played a crucial role.
Deputy German Ambassador Sivine Jansen emphasized their commitment to supporting free and fair elections, a cornerstone of democracy. Germany’s support extends beyond security personnel, with training programs for journalists to ensure objective and ethical election reporting.
Comprehensive Training for Effective Response
The EVS course curriculum is strategically designed to prepare security agencies for various scenarios. Participants, including commanding officers, received training on:
- Media interaction
- Public relations
- Engaging with political parties during elections
The program also included practical training on managing specific incidents, fostering teamwork, and strengthening collaboration among different security branches.
Expanding the Reach of Training
With continued German government support, KAIPTC plans to replicate the EVS course in other regions of Ghana. Upcoming sessions are scheduled for Kumasi (starting June 10th, 2024) and Tamale (June 17th-21st, 2024), further expanding the reach of this critical training initiative.
