Charlotte Osei, the former Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), has been honored with the prestigious title of Safohen within the Nkum Asafo Group number 4.
In a recent post on her Facebook page, Osei shared images portraying her adorned in regal attire, holding a symbol of authority—a whip. The accompanying caption hinted at her new name, Safohen Nana Ama Kesson.
Assuming this esteemed position, Osei will lead the Nkum Asafo group 4 as a formidable warrior during the upcoming Fetu Oguaa Afahye Festival, slated for September of this year.
The Fetu Afahye Festival is an annual celebration deeply rooted in the traditions of the Cape Coast Traditional Area in Ghana’s Central Region.
Scheduled from September 1 to September 7, the festival draws natives and visitors alike to partake in its week-long festivities.
Preceding the official commencement of the Fetu Afahye celebrations, the paramount chief, or Omanhene, observes a week of seclusion to seek counsel from the deities.
During this time, a prohibition on drumming, dancing, and other forms of revelry is imposed, along with a ban on fishing in the Fosu Lagoon.
Central to the festival’s rituals is the pouring of libations to Nana Fosu, the deity, and the symbolic act of the Omanhene casting his net thrice into the waters of the lagoon, marking the lifting of the fishing ban.
The peak of the Fetu Afahye Festival culminates on the first Saturday of September with a spirited procession through the community, accompanied by dancing and jubilation.
The festivities conclude with an interdenominational service at Chapel Square, encapsulating the rich cultural heritage and spiritual significance of the event.
