Highway Collapse Causes Chaos On Accra-Winneba Road

- Accra-Winneba Highway collapses due to floodwaters from diverted Ayensu River
- Over 150 homes flooded in Gomoa Mampong, leaving commuters stranded
- Authorities urge use of alternative routes as restoration works begin
A section of the main Accra-Winneba Highway has collapsed, causing significant disruptions to vehicular traffic. The incident occurred after a contractor working on the Kasoa-Cape Coast Highway diverted the Ayensu River, resulting in strong floodwaters creating a massive gully across the highway.
Commuters were left stranded on Thursday morning, with many expressing frustration and calling for urgent action to restore the damaged road and hold the contractor accountable.
The diversion of the river also caused flooding in nearby Gomoa Mampong, affecting over 150 homes on Wednesday, June 5, 2024. The bridge spanning the River Ayensu, which flows from the Eastern Region to the sea, was severely impacted.
Robert Hackman, District Director for the National Disaster Management Organisation (NaDMO) in Gomoa East, urged commuters to use alternative routes through Winneba while restoration works are underway. “We appeal to commuters to use alternative routes at Winneba while we work to restore the road,” Hackman said in an interview with Citi FM’s Calvis Tetteh.
