Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President, has called upon religious leaders to join forces with the government to advance the contentious National Cathedral initiative.

Addressing clergy members in the Greater Accra Region, Dr. Bawumia underscored the significance of the project for Ghana and urged the church to engage constructively with the government to secure private funding for its completion.

He emphasized the necessity for unity within the church and collaborative efforts with the government to explore avenues for securing private resources.

“The church needs to convene and engage with the government to chart a path forward. We must collectively determine how to access private resources to finalize the National Cathedral,” he remarked during Monday’s meeting.

Expressing confidence in a collective approach, Dr. Bawumia stated, “I believe that with our combined efforts, we can find a resolution. Leaving it unresolved is not an option.”

The National Cathedral project, pledged by President Akufo-Addo after the 2016 elections, aims to provide a 5,000-seat auditorium and a national park while bringing new skills, technology, and job opportunities to Ghana.

Despite initial plans to commission the project in March 2024, construction has stalled due to financial constraints and controversies surrounding fund management.

Accusations of misappropriation and conflicts of interest within the National Cathedral Secretariat have further complicated the project’s progress.
