- Atalanta ends Leverkusen's unbeaten run
- Gasperini's attacking strategy proved crucial
Ademola Lookman showcased his prowess on Wednesday, securing a remarkable hat-trick as Atalanta triumphed over Bayer Leverkusen with a resounding 3-0 victory in the Europa League final.
This victory not only clinched just the second major trophy in Atalanta’s 117-year history but also brought an end to the remarkable unbeaten streak of the German champions.
Lookman’s journey from struggling to find his footing in the English Premier League with Everton, Fulham, and Leicester City to flourishing under Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini in Italy culminated in a stellar performance.
He found the net twice within the opening 26 minutes before sealing the win with a goal 15 minutes from full time.
The win marked the end of Gasperini’s two-decade-long pursuit of major silverware, as his side dominated Xabi Alonso’s Leverkusen, who had earned the moniker ‘Neverlusen’ after an incredible 51-game unbeaten run.
Atalanta’s victory was characterized by their relentless attacking prowess, a strategy that paid off against formidable opponents.
Gasperini emphasized the team’s extraordinary effort, highlighting their deserving triumph against such a strong opponent.
Leverkusen’s uncertainty was evident from the start, and their uncharacteristic errors allowed Atalanta to capitalize early. Lookman capitalized on Leverkusen’s defensive lapses, scoring a brace and putting his team in a commanding position.
Despite Leverkusen’s attempts to rally, Atalanta remained composed and resolute, denying their opponents any significant opportunities.
The match showcased Atalanta’s composure and determination, securing their place in history as the first Italian winners of the Europa League in 25 years.
