- 66 supporters were hospitalised, including two with skull fractures
- Gor Mahia won 1–0, but the result was overshadowed by fan clashes
Kenyan football was rocked on Sunday after a Premier League clash between Shabana FC and Gor Mahia erupted into violence, leaving 66 fans injured and hospitalised. What was expected to be a thrilling encounter turned chaotic even before kick-off at Gusii Stadium, as rival supporters engaged in violent clashes, throwing stones and other objects.
The unrest in the stands led to multiple injuries, including two fans who sustained skull fractures. Although Gor Mahia secured a narrow 1-0 win with a late goal from midfielder Sylvester Wanyama, the result was quickly overshadowed by the disturbing scenes off the pitch.

In a statement, Gor Mahia expressed sorrow over the incident: “We witnessed very sad moments at Gusii Stadium. Police have confirmed 66 fans were injured and taken to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital and RAM Hospital. We wish them all a speedy recovery.”
The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) strongly condemned the violence and called for calm, emphasizing the importance of safety in football: “Football must be a unifying sport, not one that puts lives at risk. We are working with authorities to investigate the cause and will take firm disciplinary measures once findings are complete.”

Authorities have launched an investigation, with growing calls for improved security and crowd management at football stadiums nationwide.
