The number of fatalities resulting from the floods triggered by relentless rains in Brazil has surged to 144, as confirmed by authorities on Sunday.
The southern state of Rio Grande do Sul has been grappling with incessant downpours since the previous week, leading to a relentless surge in casualties and property damage.
The state’s civil defense agency disclosed that 125 individuals remain unaccounted for.
Injuries have climbed to 800, with over 2.1 million individuals bearing the brunt of the calamity.
Moreover, the report highlights the displacement of more than 620,000 individuals.
As rescue missions persist in the aftermath of the catastrophe, approximately 81,000 people have sought refuge in churches, schools, and sports facilities.
Governor Eduardo Leite of Rio Grande do Sul, in a statement issued on May 3rd, acknowledged the existence of inaccessible areas for officials.
“We are confronting an exceedingly unprecedented scenario. This transcends mere criticality; it stands as the most catastrophic event in the annals of our state,” he emphasized.
Leite declared a “state of disaster” for a period of 180 days, acknowledging the enormity of the tragedy while underscoring concerted endeavors to evacuate the afflicted.
