Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has issued a stern warning to the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), emphasizing the critical necessity of a seamless and tranquil transfer of power in the upcoming 2024 general elections.
Addressing reporters on Thursday, May 9, Nketia voiced apprehensions and accused the Electoral Commission (EC) of potentially enabling President Akufo-Addo’s purported reluctance to hand over power to their candidate, John Mahama.
“We do not anticipate the Electoral Commission to serve as the conduit through which Akufo-Addo will carry out his expressed determination not to relinquish power to the visionary, experienced, and dependable John Dramani Mahama.
“NPP must opt for a peaceful handover of power from NPP to NDC for their own benefit. The 2024 elections will deviate from the norm,” he asserted.
Nketiah affirmed that NDC registration agents nationwide would resist any efforts by the EC to undermine transparency in the ongoing voter registration process.
“We want to give notice, and this notice is hereby given, that NDC registration agents across the nation will oppose the EC’s covert efforts aimed at reducing transparency in the voter registration exercise.
“Let me stress that our agents must activate the party’s cutting-edge application systems to transmit all serial numbers of BVR kits in their districts and electoral areas to the National Elections and IT Directorate of the party, with or without the EC’s consent.”
Accusations and counter-accusations by the two major parties regarding the transportation of individuals to other constituencies for registration have already surfaced.
Moreover, the contentious issue of minors allegedly being permitted to register has emerged during the ongoing limited voter registration exercise.
Issuing a rallying cry, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah called upon chiefs, opinion leaders, and faith-based organizations to endorse the NDC’s plea for heightened transparency and equity, which he deemed “an essential prerequisite for peaceful elections.”
In the meantime, the EC has rebuffed the NDC’s request for the serial numbers of the Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kits utilized in the ongoing Limited Voter Registration.
