Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia emphasized the national duty highlighted by the Appiatse tragedy during the official unveiling of 124 newly constructed housing units for survivors. The event, held on Thursday, May 2, marked a significant step towards healing and reconstruction.
Dr. Bawumia expressed gratitude for the compassion demonstrated by Ghanaians in response to the devastating explosion, which claimed lives and left many injured, causing profound grief and upheaval in the Appiatse community and beyond.
“The sudden explosion shook our foundation, leaving Appiatse and indeed the entire country in deep sorrow and distress,” remarked the Vice President, reflecting on the profound impact of the incident.
He applauded President Akufo-Addo’s unwavering commitment to the recovery efforts, citing his prompt support and dedication to rebuilding Appiatse as a testament to his concern for the affected citizens.
“Akufo-Addo’s commitment and tenacity led to the construction of this new community,” Dr. Bawumia acknowledged, praising the President’s leadership and proactive approach in addressing the aftermath of the tragedy.
The completion of the 124 housing units, alongside essential amenities such as a market, educational facilities, and infrastructure improvements, represents a significant milestone in the rehabilitation process for the Appiatse community.
Situated in the Western Region’s Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality, the newly constructed homes offer a range of accommodation options, from one-bedroom to seven-bedroom units, ensuring that survivors can rebuild their lives with dignity and security.
The tragic incident, which occurred in January 2022, resulted from a collision involving a vehicle transporting mining explosives to the Chirano Mines, leading to a devastating explosion that razed the entire Appiatse community.
In response, the government swiftly initiated reconstruction efforts, culminating in the completion of the housing units and essential facilities to support the affected families and restore hope to the resilient community.
