The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have initiated an investigation into the tragic demise of a soldier at Millennium City in Kasoa, Central Region, amidst a dispute over land ownership.

According to reports, Lance Corporal (L/Cpl) Danso Michael lost his life in the altercation.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, May 1, the GAF disclosed that preliminary findings suggest L/Cpl Omar Abdul Rahman found himself entangled in a land ownership conflict concerning a half plot at Millennium City. Authorities at the Millennium City Police Station had advised all parties involved to refrain from any activity on the disputed land until a resolution was reached.

The statement further detailed, “Allegedly, L/Cpl Omar Abdul Rahman received information that individuals were carrying out work on the land. Accompanied by two colleagues – L/Cpl Danso Michael (Deceased) and L/Cpl Ametus Matthew, they visited the land and verified the information. L/Cpl Omar Abdul Rahman and his companions halted the activity and proceeded to the Millennium City Police Station to report the matter.”

“While at the Police Station, the purported landowner arrived with two others believed to be land guards, and a confrontation ensued with the soldiers, during which gunfire was exchanged, resulting in the tragic death of L/Cpl Danso Michael, who was en route to park a vehicle at the Police Station. The police intervened, disarmed, and apprehended the shooter upon realizing L/Cpl Danso had sustained injuries from the gunfire. The deceased soldier’s body has been transferred to the 37 Military Hospital morgue,” it continued.

Expressing heartfelt condolences to the family, colleagues, friends, and acquaintances of the deceased soldier, the GAF assured cooperation with the police in conducting further inquiries.

“The public will be duly updated on the investigation’s findings in due time,” it assured.

Furthermore, the GAF vehemently denounced the unwarranted assault.

“We reaffirm our dedication to upholding law and order in our communities and urge all citizens to seek peaceful and lawful avenues to resolve land disputes, refraining from resorting to violence to prevent such lamentable incidents,” it concluded.
