Chelsea reported to agree £117m deal for Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers
- Chelsea are reported to have agreed a £117 million deal for Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers.
- The proposed transfer would make Rogers Chelsea’s record signing and could set a record fee for an English player.
- Rogers is expected to undergo a medical after returning from England’s 2026 World Cup duty.
Chelsea have reportedly agreed a £117 million deal with Aston Villa for England midfielder Morgan Rogers, in a move that would set a new club transfer record.
Rogers, 23, is expected to sign a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge, with an option for a further year. He is due to undergo a medical on Monday after returning from England duty at the 2026 World Cup, according to the report.
If completed, the transfer would surpass Chelsea’s previous record outlay of £107 million for Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez in 2023. It would also exceed the reported £116 million fee agreed by Manchester City for Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson earlier in the summer, making Rogers the most expensive English player.
The move comes as Chelsea’s new manager, Xabi Alonso, prepares his squad for the forthcoming Premier League season.
Villa and Middlesbrough set for proceeds
Rogers joined Aston Villa from Middlesbrough in February 2024 in an agreement initially valued at £8 million and rising to £15 million. Middlesbrough are entitled to 20 per cent of any profit Villa make on a future sale under a clause in that deal.
That arrangement means the Championship club are expected to receive at least £20.4 million from the proposed Chelsea transfer, depending on the add-ons triggered during Rogers’ time at Villa.
Rogers scored 21 goals in 85 league appearances for Villa and was part of the side that won the Europa League last season. He has made 22 senior appearances for England, scoring once, and played in seven matches at this summer’s World Cup.
He would be the second Villa midfielder to leave during the week, following Youri Tielemans’ reported £35 million move to Manchester United. Villa have also brought in Switzerland international Johan Manzambi from Freiburg and are said to be pursuing Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes.
