President John Dramani Mahama held a bilateral meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80) in New York.
The meeting, held on Tuesday, September 23, focused on strengthening trade, diplomatic, and bilateral relations between Ghana and France.
In a post shared on Facebook, President Mahama described the engagement as “productive,” stating:
“Strengthening Ghana-France trade, bilateral and diplomatic relations. Good meeting with @emmanuelmacron on the sidelines of #UNGA80.”
Earlier in the day, President Mahama participated in a high-level health meeting hosted by the Africa CDC, themed:
“Securing Africa’s Health Sovereignty: Political Leadership for Sustainable Health Financing, Local Manufacturing, and Pandemic Preparedness.”
In his address, he reaffirmed Ghana’s dedication to achieving health sovereignty, highlighting key initiatives including:
- The Ghana Medical Trust Fund Act, to support treatment for non-communicable diseases
- Establishment of a National Vaccine Institute with an initial GH₵75 million in funding
- Upcoming rollout of free primary healthcare to ensure universal access
- The uncapping of the National Health Insurance levy, unlocking GH₵33.5 billion (approx. $300 million) in health funding
President Mahama also cited Ghana’s leadership in advancing continental health policies, including the recent launch of the Accra Compact and the Accra Reset Agenda during the African Health Sovereignty Summit.
“Africa must not only be invited to global health discussions; Africa must be a co-convener, a co-designer, and a co-owner of the solutions and outcomes,” he emphasized.
