The Senior Staff Association-Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), Federation of Senior Staff Association of Ghana (FUSSAG), and Teachers and Educational Workers Union of Trade Union Congress (TEWU-TUC) have announced the suspension of their intended industrial action. The strike, initially scheduled to commence on August 9th, 2024, was called off following the government’s intervention in addressing the unions’ demands.
The unions had earlier served notice of their intention to embark on industrial action over the government’s failure to meet their demands. However, in a statement issued on Thursday, August 8, the unions announced that they had suspended the planned strike.
The decision to suspend the strike was made after the government extended the upward adjustment in the Vehicle Maintenance Allowance (VMA) to union members. The unions expressed gratitude to the government for this development, acknowledging their commitment to addressing the concerns of union members.
The unions believe that the restoration of the VMA demonstrates a willingness to work with them to resolve outstanding issues. However, they appealed to the government to extend the adjustment to all categories of Senior Staff of Public Universities in Ghana without the eligibility clause.
The unions assured their members that they will continue to engage with the government and other stakeholders to address all outstanding issues affecting their working conditions. The unions expressed appreciation for the understanding and cooperation of their members and the media houses that carried their messages, and committed to continuing to communicate with their members and keep them informed of any developments.
