St. Elizabeth Hospital boosts breast cancer awareness in Ahafo

- Head of Labour Ward Deborah Adu Asante calls for stronger community efforts
St. Elizabeth Hospital in Hwidiem, Ahafo Region, has strengthened its campaign against breast cancer with a series of awareness and screening activities aimed at saving more lives in the Asutifi South District.
Speaking to Adom News during a breast cancer awareness float through the main streets of Hwidiem, the Head of the Labour Ward, Deborah Adu Asante, said the hospital has intensified its outreach efforts to promote early detection and treatment of breast cancer among women in the area.

She explained that throughout October, the hospital is organizing various community programmes — including health floats, visits to churches and schools, and free breast screening sessions at the hospital.
“To effectively fight breast cancer in Asutifi South, we must step up our efforts,” she emphasized.

A midwife at the hospital, Cecilia Newman, expressed concern about the growing tendency of self-medication among women who notice changes in their breasts.
She urged residents to seek professional medical help instead of resorting to home remedies or self-treatment.
“Self-medication is not the answer. If you notice any unusual change in your breast, please visit the hospital for proper examination and care,” she advised.
The hospital’s initiative forms part of Ghana’s National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which promotes early detection and preventive health practices to help reduce deaths associated with the disease.
