Roads and Highways Minister Kwame Governs Agbodza has pledged an additional three months of his salary to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, also known as Mahama Cares.
According to 3News, Mr Agbodza made the announcement during a Citizens Engagement with the President at Ho Technical University on Friday, July 17. He said ministers and Members of Parliament had already committed portions of their salaries to the fund before his further pledge.
The minister also appealed to road contractors to support the initiative voluntarily, with particular reference to a proposed cardio centre for the Volta Region. He expressed the hope that contractors working with government could contribute towards construction of the facility as part of efforts to improve healthcare delivery.
Mr Agbodza said he did not intend to compel any contractor to donate. However, he said he would ask the management of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund for a list of voluntary contributors and submit it to President John Mahama.
He further said the list would be relevant as government prepares the second phase of the Big Push road infrastructure programme, during which further road contracts are expected to be allocated. The minister said he had no power to take action against a contractor that did not contribute.
About the fund
The Ghana Medical Trust Fund is a national health policy initiative intended to provide direct financial assistance for treatment of chronic non-communicable diseases. The source said it was launched on April 29, 2025, as a safety net for advanced and high-cost care not adequately covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme.
The report did not state the value of Mr Agbodza’s three-month salary pledge, identify contractors expected to contribute, or provide details of the proposed cardio centre’s budget, timetable or procurement arrangements.
