MTN Supports Mepe Recovery Efforts

This year’s Afenorto Festival in Mepe went beyond its usual vibrant display of culture — it became a powerful symbol of resilience for a community still grappling with the aftermath of the Akosombo Dam spillage. Amid the celebrations, it served as a call for renewed partnerships to aid recovery and rebuild hope.

MTN Ghana contributed GH¢20,000 to the Mepe Traditional Council, but their presence extended beyond financial support. The telecom company used the occasion to foster community engagement around economic recovery, digital empowerment, and healing in the wake of disaster.

Presenting the cheque on behalf of MTN, Ransford Gyan — the company’s Regional Manager for the Eastern, Volta, and Oti Regions — commended the people of Mepe for their strength and reiterated MTN’s ongoing commitment to their development.

“We share in your pain and salute your resilience, unity, and determination,” Mr. Gyan said.
“Afenorto is about togetherness — and MTN is here to connect you not just digitally, but socially and culturally.”

The flooding caused by last year’s dam spillage displaced thousands in Mepe, wiping out homes, farms, and livelihoods. Recovery efforts have been slow, prompting calls from local leaders for sustained support to restore infrastructure and economic stability.

For Torgbe Kwasi Nego VI, Mankralo of Mepe, MTN’s donation carries both symbolic and practical significance.

“This support comes at a critical moment as we strive to rebuild,” he said. “It’s encouraging to see corporate institutions like MTN recognize our challenges and stand with us.”

MTN’s involvement in the festival also included on-the-ground community outreach. The company set up customer service and sales booths, educated residents about mobile money fraud, and introduced new digital solutions — weaving practical empowerment into the cultural festivities.

Held annually by the Mepe Traditional Area, the Afenorto Festival brings together citizens from across Ghana and the diaspora for reflection, reunion, and discussions on development. This year’s edition stood out as a celebration of resilience, blending heritage with connectivity and corporate collaboration to envision a stronger future for Mepe.
