Mpatuam Residents Protest Fatal Clashes with Military Officers

Residents of Mpatuam, located in the Amansie West District of the Ashanti Region, have staged protests following the deaths of two individuals, including the Assembly Member for the Esaase Dominase Electoral Area.

The fatalities occurred during violent clashes with military personnel earlier this week, which have since escalated tensions in the community.

The disturbances reportedly began on Monday, when soldiers confronted residents who were allegedly attempting to enter a mining concession owned by Asanko Gold. The situation intensified on Tuesday, resulting in further violence.

Sekyi Michael, Assembly Member for Mpatuam West, confirmed that one person died during Monday’s confrontation. He added that the military returned the next day, leading to another clash in which a second person—an Assembly Member—was killed.

In response, the Ashanti Regional Minister visited the affected community to console grieving families. He assured residents that the government is taking the matter seriously and urged them to remain calm as investigations are underway.

Despite this, tensions remain high. Protesters are demanding justice, transparency, and accountability, insisting that the victims’ deaths must not go unanswered.
