Former Ghana international Michael Essien has signed a new two-year contract to continue as assistant coach at Danish club FC Nordsjælland.
With his previous contract nearing its end, the club has confirmed that Essien will remain with the team for the upcoming seasons.
The 42-year-old joined Nordsjælland initially as a player-coach before officially becoming part of the coaching staff on September 9, 2020.
Since then, Essien has become an integral part of the coaching team. He holds a UEFA A License and has completed specialized UEFA courses in football management and organization.
During his playing career, Essien represented Ghana in the 2006 and 2014 FIFA World Cups, earning 59 caps for the Black Stars.
His club career included stints with Bastia, Lyon, Chelsea, Real Madrid, AC Milan, Panathinaikos, Persib Bandung (Indonesia), and Sabail (Azerbaijan).
In 2024, Essien turned down an offer to join Ghana’s national team as assistant coach under Otto Addo, choosing instead to focus on his role at FC Nordsjælland.
