Metro Mass Cuts Intercity Services to Boost Accra Intracity Transport

- Metro Mass Transit Limited has reduced some intercity bus services
- The move is aimed at freeing up buses for intracity operations in Accra
- The decision follows a directive from the Minister for Transport
Metro Mass Transit Limited (MMT) has announced a scaling down of some intercity bus services in order to reassign buses to intracity operations in Accra, a move aimed at easing recent transportation difficulties in the capital.
The decision is intended to reduce pressure on commuters, especially during peak morning and evening periods.
According to the Head of Communications at MMT, Mohammed Mubarak Watara, the adjustment follows a directive from the Minister for Transport, Joseph Bukari Nikpe, who asked the company to support private transport operators during rush hours.
Speaking on Accra-based Citi FM on Thursday, January 15, 2026, Mr. Watara said the Minister had engaged management of Metro Mass and its sister company to ensure the availability of additional buses to help manage traffic congestion.
“I can confirm that the Minister met with Metro Mass and our sister company to ensure that some buses are made available during the rush hours,” he stated.
Mr. Watara admitted that MMT is currently operating with a limited number of buses but explained that measures have been put in place to make the most of existing resources. These include extending operating hours and increasing the number of intracity routes.
He noted that services have been intensified on high-demand routes such as Adenta, where all 10 electric buses are now in operation from 4:30 a.m. until after 8:30 p.m.
Further arrangements have also been introduced along the Kasoa corridor, with additional stations set up to serve commuters traveling from Kaneshie to Kasoa, as well as along the Circle–Amasaman and Circle–Nsawam routes.
To sustain these expanded intracity services, Mr. Watara said MMT has reduced operations on certain long-distance routes.
“We have cut down the number of buses operating on the Kumasi and Cape Coast routes to allow more buses to serve intracity commuters,” he added.
