The Medical Laboratory Professional Workers’ Union (MELPWU) has expressed concern over the alleged assault and detention of one of its members, Mr. Isaac Sakyi, a Medical Laboratory Scientist at St. Elizabeth Catholic Hospital in Hwidiem, by military personnel during an operation in the area.

In a memorandum dated November 12, 2025, and signed by Dr. Cephas Kofi Akortor, General Secretary of MELPWU, the union described the incident as “unfortunate and troubling.”
Reports indicate that Mr. Sakyi was on legitimate night duty when he was physically assaulted and detained by soldiers in the early hours of Wednesday.
MELPWU stated that it has begun engaging the Police, Hospital Management, and other relevant authorities to ascertain the facts of the incident and ensure justice and the safety of the affected member.
The union urged its members to remain calm while leadership addresses the matter and noted that it may consider further actions, including the withdrawal of services, if necessary.
“The union will communicate the next line of action, including a possible withdrawal of services, to seek justice for our member once verified information is available,” the statement read.
The leadership also reassured members of its commitment to pursuing justice and called for patience, solidarity, and cooperation during the ongoing investigations.
